June 29, 1944. From Bill to his wife. Letter 3 of 6.

A quick note from serviceman Bill to his wife, sharing a work duty update and feeling grateful that it’s not what you know, but who you know!

Letter 3 of 6 in this series.

Thursday afternoon

Dear honey —

I’ve got a lot better job than I expected. All I have to do is to keep the lines straight and keep the rough play down. After chow I inspect 360 bowls for cleanliness and pack them in line on a rack and my job is done. That’s a lot better job than some got. Boy those guys work in the grease pits and scullery and they don’t get through until two hours after I do.

There’s a guy from Groton who went down with me when I went for the physical in Boston and then went with me to be inducted, in fact we’ve been together from the start and he landed the job as our Company clerk. When the work list came up, well, he simply gave me the best job. It ain’t what you know it’s who you know.

Just a short letter this time, but I’ll write a long one tomorrow. Remember I love you and miss you.

Love,

Bill
